Mary now feels a little bored, so she decides to listen to a show on BBC Radio 1.

*How can she listen to a station that's thousands of miles across the pond?*

In London, radio presenters are in the studio hosting guests. Mics capture their banter. Sound from each mic is mixed and sent to the studio computer. 

Here, a program called an encoder, encodes this sound to a broadcastable format, for instance, AAC 64 Kbps.

The stream is then sent to the broadcasting server. Thousands of listeners, like Mary, connect to the station's broadcast server with a plethora of devices:

- Smartphones
- Smart speaker
- Laptops
- Computers
- Gaming consoles, etc.

The first basic equipment you'll need is a microphone. 

Hold on, don't skip to Amazon or another retail website just yet. 

There are many mics to choose from. In most professional studios, you'll find dynamic or condenser mics that require XLR cabling.

Get a USB mic for a simple setup. 

When you connect it to your laptop or computer, there is no need to purchase an audio mixing console.

Think of it like a computer with lots of memory and network bandwidth to support many listeners. 

Your computer can act as an audio broadcasting server. You only need to install server-side programs like ShoutCast or Icecast (which we recommend).

Similarly, there is a way to rent a server online, and configure it for your needs.

But it is not as easy as it sounds, as you have to monitor your stream 24/7, ensure your server is running optimally, know how things work technically, etc.

Most broadcasters choose not to invest lots of time and resources in setting up servers on their own.

According to a piece published in The Radio Magazine (June 15th, 2005), phone-in shows emerged in LA sometime between the late 80s and early 90s. 

Regularl talk programs on AM stations were found to be too expensive to run because of the need to have experts, authors, etc.

Many people were also required to produce the show. So, rather than inviting guests in studio, prepping for many hours, etc., the new format entailed DJs discussing standard topics such as politics with call-in listeners.

1. **Encourages participation:** Listening can be a passive activity. But when a listener calls in, they become active participants in your programming. 
2. **Spontaneous original content:** Struggling to fill up broadcast hours? Listeners are a great source of new content.
3. **Entertaining:** Interesting conversations draw listeners and keep their attention glued.
4. **Conduct live interviews:** Not all high-profile guests can travel thousands of miles for in-person interviews. But they are literally a phone call, WhatsApp call, Skype call, or Zoom call away.

### **1. Open Line **

The dictionary defines "open line" as a TV or radio program that invites listeners to participate by phone. 

Basically, each show has:

- **Topic of discussion:** For instance: “The effect of COVID-19 and Is the local government doing enough?” 
- **Explainers:** Before opening the phone lines to callers, the presenter dissects the topic at hand. For instance, the successes the government has had in fighting the virus. Problems and challenges are emphasized so that callers can offer suggestions. 
- **An expert or host weighing in:** Later in the program and after taking calls, the host may invite an expert or someone more knowledgable on the topic at hand to weigh in on the issues.

You must research to execute the open line format properly. Callers will need factual information that also guides their opinions.

It helps to have a producer screening calls and obtaining basic details from callers. So, you can introduce them before putting them live.

### **2. Ask an [Expert] **

Listeners have many questions that they need answers to. So it makes a lot of sense to invite an expert to answer some of them.

For instance, you may invite a licensed real estate agent to your studio. With all the current advances in tech, they can even participate remotely.

Not all calls will be aired live on air. You can feature the most informative or entertaining callers because of the limited air-time.

After the Covid-19 outbreak, many radio shows and television programs invited doctors to answer questions to do with face masks, infection rates, etc

During their morning shows, they ask listeners to download the e-paper. Then, the host asks listeners to find a word on an article that appears on a particular page. 

The first listener to call in and answer the question stands to win some prize money.

### **Advantages of recorded audio over live calls **

- Getting people to do the actual recording means that they will be more in control --so less nervousness & more openness. 
- You don’t have to invest in new equipment. 
- There is less time in setting up the show.
- Few things can go wrong since you’re receiving the audio.

### **Disadvantages of people recording themselves **

- You may have less control since you’re not asking live questions to listeners.
- It lacks the live component. 

## Chapter 4: Different Ways of Hosting Live Calls

In this chapter, we'll go over some of the ways to take live calls on the radio. It entails calling the listener or having them phone-in and speaking directly to them on-air.

You will only need your smartphone as the basic equipment. We'll cover two simple options for this beginners guide (so will not delve into setting up mix-minuses just yet):

#### 1) Speaker Phone Method

Have you ever used your phone's speaker during a call? 

With this basic method, you initiate a phone call or receive one. You'll just hold up your phone with its speaker, preferably facing the mic so that it can pick up the most sound.

The advantage of this method is that you don't need extra equipment. All you need is a USB microphone plugged into your computer. Or a mic routed through the mixing console.

There is a major disadvantage, though. The audio is not very clear. 

#### 2) Phone to Mixing Console

The second method just entails connecting your mobile phone to the mixing console using the 3.5mm headphone jack. 

It's quite possible that your phone may be missing the head jack plug. And in this case, you might require an adapter. 

You'll also need headphones so you can monitor the sound going through the mixer.

### How to setup Winamp Shoutcast DSP with your broadcasting server

#### 1. How to install Winamp & Shout DSP

You'll first have to download and install Winamp if you don't have it set up. Note that you can install Winamp on MacOS, but the streaming plugin works with Windows only.  

- Download both programs (Check out the second download link above)
- Run the Winamp installer until you run into this page.

- You can launch the program to see the first look. 
- Next, run the Shoutcast DSP installer. It will request you to close all instances of Winamp if you have any running.

#### 2. Encoder setup

- After installing the Shoutcast dsp plugin, go ahead and relaunch Winamp.. 
- Access the settings page: From the main menu choose **Options > Preferences > Plugins > DSP/Effect**
- Select the **Shoutcast Source DSP** > **Configure Active Plug-in**

##### Entering your server details

Here are the instructions on how to manually setup Shoutcast DSP Plugin with your server. You can only stream to Shoutcast 2 and Shoutcast 1 broadcasting servers.

For streaming to IceCast, consider using the Edcast plugin.

Connect using: v2.x mode

Server Address: e.g. 10048.cloudrad.io

Port: e.g. 8000

Stream ID: e.g. 1

DJ / User ID: Leave blank

Password: e.g. n3t8zdw0ka

##### Audio Streaming Settings

On the SHOUTcast Source DSP, click the **Directory** tab and input your radio information. 

**Select the Encoder** tab to set **Encoder Type** to **MP3**. 

Then, in Encoder Settings select the bitrate. For music, we recommend 128kbps or more and stereo.

#### 3. Dsp Shoutcast broadcasting 

- Select **Connect** to start sending audio to your streaming server.
- Load music in Winamp, create playlists, add online sources, and start broadcasting.

## About RadioCaster

RadioCaster is a program by DJSoft.Net which also distributes RadioBOSS \- a radio automation software. With RadioCaster, you capture any audio from your sound card, network stream or from playback devices like your speaker.

You can create multiple encoders to stream in different formats to your broadcasting server. RadioCaster also retrieves statistics like the number of listeners connected to your stream.

### How to setup RadioCaster

#### 1. How to install 

- Download Radio Caster. (The trial version inserts a tone after a few minutes of use). 
- Open the downloaded file to run the setup wizard. 
- On the first run, you will need to configure RadioCaster:

How to use RadioCaster with Radio DJ or with another radio automation program: 

- You can capture sound from your output devices such as your speakers. Under **Source** > Click **Change and specify the input source.**
- You can choose your Metadata source URL, file or stream. Alternatively, you can update the Metadata manually by selecting **Use text.**
- Once you're done, click **OK.** 

#### 2. Encoder setup

- Click the **\+ (plus)** > **Configuration Wizard** to configure a new encoder.

- Select **Configuration Wizard.**
- Next, choose your server type.

- Click **Finish.** 
- You can change the **Encoder Type** and **Bitrate.** (We recommend 128 Kbps for MP3 or 64 Kbps for AAC).

- You can also update your Station Info, Metadata source and Statistics.
- After your done, click **OK**.

#### 3. Start Broadcasting

- Open your media player or radio automation software and play your music. 
- Listen to your stream by opening **Listen** > **Player** > **Preview (Demo scripts)**
- Tip: You can change skin by clicking **RadioCaster**>**Style.**
